Is a Spice Mill Really Worth It, or Is It Just Another Kitchen Gadget? (25 อ่าน)

1 ก.ย. 2569 11:32

I’ve been thinking about getting a spice mill, but I’m honestly not sure if it is worth adding another kitchen tool to my counter.

I already have a decent collection of spices at home, including black pepper, cumin, cinnamon, and a few ready-made spice blends. Most of the time, I just use them straight from the jar. It’s quick, easy, and I’ve never really thought much about grinding spices fresh.

But recently, I started noticing more people talking about freshly ground spices and how much difference they can make to everyday cooking. That got me curious.

Does a spice mill actually make food taste noticeably better, or is the difference so small that it isn’t worth the extra effort?

I’m especially interested in how useful they are for normal home cooking rather than fancy recipes.

For example, would you use one for everyday things like eggs, roasted vegetables, pasta, soups, grilled chicken, or salads? I can see how freshly ground black pepper could be useful, but I’m wondering if there are other spices that really benefit from being milled fresh.

Cinnamon is another one I’m curious about. I recently came across an Alba Cinnamon in Mill option from Zaica Life while looking at different spice products. I’m not looking to buy something just because it looks nice, but the idea of grinding cinnamon when I actually need it sounds interesting.

I’m also wondering about spice blends.

Do you think a spice mill is better for individual whole spices, while blends are better when you want convenience? Or do some people actually grind their own ingredients to create homemade blends?

For example, I make biryani at home occasionally and usually use a prepared masala. Would freshly grinding a few whole spices and adding them to the dish actually improve the flavor, or would that just create more work without much benefit?

Another thing I’d like advice on is the type of mill.

There are manual mills and electric mills, and I’m not sure which one makes more sense. A manual spice mill seems simple and probably easier to clean, but an electric one might be more convenient if you use it often.

I’d also like to know whether it is better to have separate mills for different spices. I can imagine using the same mill for cinnamon and black pepper might leave some flavors behind.

For anyone who has been using a spice mill for a while:

Which spices do you actually grind fresh?

Is the flavor difference noticeable?

Manual or electric — which do you prefer?

Do you use whole spices instead of pre-ground spices regularly?

Are spice mills something you use every day, or do they mostly sit in the cupboard?

I’m trying to decide whether this is one of those small kitchen upgrades that genuinely improves cooking or just another gadget that sounds useful when you first buy it.

I would love to hear some real experiences before I make a decision.
