Buchalter Law Firm just contacted me about a debt – what should I actually do? (6 อ่าน)

So I got a letter yesterday from Buchalter Law Firm saying they’re representing some creditor on an old debt. Honestly, my stomach dropped. I’ve heard of them before, but never thought I’d be on their radar. The letter was pretty formal and mentioned possible legal action if I don’t respond.
I’m not even 100% sure the debt is mine or if the amount is correct. It’s been years. I don’t want to ignore it and end up getting sued, but I also don’t want to call them blindly and say something stupid that hurts me.
From what I’ve been reading online – like on consumer law sites – the first thing I should do is ask for written debt validation within 30 days. Also, pull my credit report to see if it matches. Some people say to never admit the debt over the phone.
Has anyone here dealt with Buchalter specifically? Did they actually sue you, or were they open to settling? And what’s the deal with the statute of limitations? I’m in a state where it might be past that time, but I’m scared to even bring it up.
Would love to hear real experiences or any step-by-step advice. Just trying not to mess this up. Thanks.
