Used gearbox from scrap yard vs rebuild, which is the smarter gamble? (4 อ่าน)

My 2013 A6 transmission has finally given up at 190k and I'm trying to decide between two not so great options, either buying a used gearbox from a scrap yard in Sharjah or getting my existing unit rebuilt by a specialist. The scrap yard units are tempting because they're cheap, like three to four thousand dirhams with a thirty day warranty if you're lucky, but obviously you have no idea how it was treated or maintained and I could be back in the same situation in six months. The rebuild quotes I'm getting are roughly triple that amount but come with a year warranty and at least I know what's been done inside and that all the wear items are fresh. Money is genuinely tight right now with the kids starting school and everything else that's going on, otherwise the rebuild would be the obvious choice. I've been calling around to shops that specialize in Audi transmission repair to ask if they ever install customer supplied used boxes and most of them refuse outright, they only want to do the rebuild which I sort of understand from a liability perspective. Has anyone here actually gone the used gearbox route and had it work out fine, or is that just false economy and I'll end up paying for a rebuild anyway when it inevitably fails?
