Recently, I was trying to get in touch with an old colleague and did a quick search to find his current contact info. I used a common people search site, one I've used before without much thought. This time, however, the report it generated was way more detailed than I expected. It didn't just have his phone number; it had past addresses, possible relatives, and even some suggested "associates" that seemed completely random and some of whom had serious criminal records.



It made me incredibly uneasy and got me thinking about the whole data broker industry. How are they pulling this information together, and what are the real-world consequences for regular people?



I'm curious if any other reporters or researchers have dug into this. What did you find? How do these sites operate, and what's the best way to inform the public about the potential dangers? I found one of these sites, whosonline, to be particularly aggressive with its data aggregation, but I know they are just one of many.
